NAMIBIA: Rain and Red Velvet Mites

We got some good rain at Vieranas Safaris Mopani camp last night and first thing this morning the children where outside looking for these little red bugs. In Namibia they are known as red rain spiders, even though they don't belong to the same species. They are in fact from the Trombidiidae species or Red velvet mite

Their striking red colour is to warn predators, when you pick them up they roll into a ball and pretend dead, after a while they will start moving again.

These velvet mites is very important to the environment as they form part of a community of soil arthropods that is critical in decomposition and maintaining the structure of a healthy eco-system
